Town and parish councils are the first level of local government. They provide communities with a democratic voice and a structure for taking community action. They also work towards improving community wellbeing, and providing better services.
Middlesbrough has two parish councils - Stainton and Thornton is one, and Nunthorpe is the other. They are independent of the council, but work closely with us on issues which affect their communities.

My wife Denise and I moved into Stainton Village in 1973 and have enjoyed living in the same house for more than 43 years. I have spent all my life working in and supporting the chemical industries of Teesside, joining ICI at Billingham in 1960 as an apprentice, and, leaving full time employment at the end of 1997 as a Teesside group training manager. My background is in engineering but my last working position involved me in a range of training activities including management development, becoming a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CMCIPD) in the early 1990s. In 1998 I became self employed and am still working as a training and development consultant, creating and working with many different companies mainly on management improvement programmes. I was invited to join the Parish Council more than 12 years ago which then led to becoming a member of the Stainton and Thornton Green Spaces group, of which I am now treasurer. From this small group of volunteers we formed the TMG, a sub group of like-minded seniors that meets on a Thursday morning to maintain the beautiful features like the Quarry, Stainton Wood, and Kell Gate Green that we have in our village.

I have lived in Thornton since 2004 with my husband John and daughter Charlotte, having previously lived in Butterwick outside Sedgefield. We enjoy living in this beautiful quiet area and I take pride in the all year round flower displays in both the villages and our well-maintained green spaces. I qualified as a teacher and took up a post in a Newcastle comprehensive school teaching maths. After leaving the profession to bring up my 2 children, I returned initially as a supply teacher in many schools in Stockton and Billingham, after which I returned to teaching full time in a school in Hartlepool. During this period I studied with the Open University and gained an MA. I retired from teaching after 35 years. At present I am Vice Chair of the Stainton and Thornton Community Council, as well as Parish Councillor and I edit the quarterly Stainton and Thornton newsletter. In my spare time I work on a voluntary basis, Saturdays and Sundays, in my daughter’s cafe.

My parents moved into Thornton Village just before I was born so I have lived in the village all my life. I have seen the many changes from the 1950s up to the present day. As a youngster I was involved in the Cubs and Scouts and took part in many village activities. After school and college I went to work in the electronics and telecommunications industry, including working as a test engineer for GEC in Middlesbrough. In 1981 I decided to become self-employed and have been involved with electronic and computer systems, and have worked in many countries around the world. I became a member of the Parish Council in 2015 at the same time became ward councillor for Stainton and Thornton on Middlesbrough Council. I am also the chair of the environmental committee and vice chair of the community council.

I have been a resident of Stainton, with my family, for some 16 years. My background for thirty years was in the many aspects of law enforcement, operating at a senior level. Since 'retirement' in 2002, I have worked with the public, private and voluntary sectors, developing and leading multi-agency teams, in the world of project management, delivering wide-ranging projects, which ultimately seek to improve the quality of life for local people. I have many interests outside of work, but felt it was timely to support local community interests in ensuring we endeavour to retain our identity and have a voice in the future direction of Stainton and Thornton.

My wife Helen and I have owned our house in the village for over 30 years and I have been an active part of the community for well over half that. I was educated at a Newcastle Grammar School, before moving to Sussex to study biochemistry whist working for Beecham Research at their offices in Worthing. Following a period of time working as a pharmaceutical representative, I joined a division of BOC firstly working in the UK and then on their export division. We lived and worked in Dubai in the UAE before moving back to the UK to our house in Stainton. I then worked as export manager for a large American corporation from my base in the UK. I was lucky enough to travel and work in most of the Middle and Far East, as well as large parts of Africa. I eventually settled permanently in Stainton where I owned and ran the village Post Office for 19 years, before it closed in 2010. I have been a Parish Councillor for over 10 years working alongside Councillor Maelor Williams. Following Maelor's death in 2015, I became chairman of the Parish Council. I was an inaugural member of the Stainton and Thornton Community Council and I am chairman of The Friends of Stainton and Thornton Green Spaces. I care passionately about the villages and hope to continue to work to maintain and improve the villages for the benefit of everyone.

I moved into the village in 2018 with my wife of 39 years. Our 2 children and their families also live in Stainton. I am now almost retired from my most recent job as a health and safety manager in power stations and wind farms around the UK and Ireland. My friend and I sing in care homes and will sing at small venues if the money raised is going to charity. I am also a retired football referee after 28 years in the local leagues, and now try to keep active with woodworking.
Meetings of Stainton and Thornton Parish Council usually take place on the second Tuesday of alternate months at Stainton Memorial Hall. The meeting in March is always a joint meeting with the Community Council and the meeting in May is always the Annual General Meeting. The meetings generally start at 7:15pm. Any change of dates and timing, if necessary, will be advertised on this website.
Parish Council meetings are open to the public. The council chairman does have the power to exclude the public from part of a meeting if he judges that publicity would be prejudicial to the public interest or because of the confidential nature of the business to be transacted, but this rarely happens. In practice, you are very welcome to attend Parish Council meetings.
Members of the public have no rights to speak at Parish Council meetings unless the council authorises it. But if you've got a constructive point to make about what's going on in Stainton and Thornton, the council will usually give you an opportunity to make that point.
