Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are suitable for both school and college leavers, or people looking to retrain.

We have a long history of employing apprentices in all areas of the council, with most moving on to full time positions. Our apprenticeships begin at level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs) for entry-level positions, with the opportunity to progress to level 7 (equivalent to a Master's degree) in some areas.

Middlesbrough Community Learning offers a range of different apprenticeships, at different levels. Others will be added based on demand and availability. Check out the kinds of apprenticeships we offer below, or have a look at our current apprenticeship vacancies.

Level 2

Customer Service Practitioner

The role of a customer service practitioner is to deliver high quality products and services to the customers of their organisation. This will be delivered from the workplace, digitally, or through going out into the customer’s own locality. These may be one-off or routine contacts and include dealing with orders, payments, offering advice, guidance and support, meet-and-greet, sales, fixing problems, after care, or measuring customer satisfaction. You may be the first point of contact for customers, and work in any sector or organisation type.

Supply Chain Operator/Warehouse Operative

Warehouse Operatives work in a variety of warehouse environments. Duties include taking deliveries, checking for damaged/missing items, storing goods, moving stock by various methods, picking/packing orders, loading goods for dispatch, maintaining stock records and documentation, and cleaning. They are required to safely use a range of equipment, machinery and vehicles relevant to their role. Warehouse Operatives communicate with a wide range of people and customers, meeting customers’ expectations by providing a quality service that encourages repeat business.

Level 3

Business Administrator

Business administrators have a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills, and behaviours which can be applied in all business sectors. The role may involve working independently or as part of a team. Business administrators develop key skills and behaviours to support their own progression towards management responsibilities.

Cultural Learning and Participation Officer

Cultural Learning and Participation Officers (CLPO) plan, organise and coordinate artistic and cultural education workshops, schedules of activity and community engagement projects that will vary in duration. Typically they include teaching arts, culture and heritage subjects, creative workshops, visits, talks, performances, festivals, events and digital arts, using online content and social networks as appropriate. Activities may be accessed in cultural venues, online (through delivering webinars) and other settings for example schools, hospitals, prisons and community settings such as care homes.

Customer Service Specialist

The main purpose of a customer service specialist is to be a ‘professional’ for direct customer support within all sectors and organisation types. You are an advocate of Customer Service who acts as a referral point for dealing with more complex or technical customer requests, complaints, and queries. You are often an escalation point for complicated or ongoing customer problems. As an expert in your organisation’s products and/or services, you share knowledge with your wider team and colleagues, influencing change and improvements in service.

Event Assistant

An Event Assistant is an entry level position, typically working within a team of people in an events company or within the events department of a larger organisation.Supporting Event Planners or Project Managers, carrying out a diverse range of tasks to plan, organise and deliver an event: for example, searching for the right location and venue for the event; working with the design team on the look and feel of the event; or organising logistics like transportation and catering.

Events cover a broad range of activities and sizes, from small numbers of attendees through to thousands, and around 75% are conferences, meetings, trade shows and exhibitions.

Junior Content Producer

A Junior Content Producer is responsible for developing and creating content that can be used across a variety of media including digital, social media, broadcast or in print. Working to the customer/client brief, they research, prepare and develop the media messaging to maximise audience engagement. The content they create can be used as part of media, advertising and marketing campaigns. Junior Content Producers collaborate with designers and developers to create content for web pages and social media content. An enthusiasm for technology and creating great online experiences is a must. They can work in advertising, marketing or digital agencies, or in interactive roles for broadcasters.

Marketing Assistant

Marketing assistants are found in every sector and industry and across large, medium and small commercial, public sector and not-for-profit organisations. Roles can sit within a specific company/agency that provides marketing deliverables and advice to external clients, or within an internal marketing team, delivering marketing activities to drive that business.

Their purpose is to support customer focussed marketing activities that drive the demand for a product or service through awareness raising and/or perception building to generate results to the bottom line. This is an entry route for many Marketing professionals who progress their career into more senior marketing positions.

Public Service Operational Delivery Officer

Operational Delivery Officers have the vital job of keeping the country running. They make sure that citizens get the services and protection they need, and help people understand what is available and what they need to do to comply with the rules. Operational Delivery Officers make a difference every day to the lives of millions of people. They do hundreds of jobs in most departments and agencies within central and local government, delivering services for towns, cities, boroughs or counties.

Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress. They are good role models, act with honesty and integrity, take part in team meetings; contribute to planning and class activities. Promoting Fundamental British Values through spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and positive behaviours are crucial in contributing to improved pupil progress and development.

Team Leader/Supervisor

A team leader/supervisor is a first line management role, with operational/project responsibilities or responsibility for managing a team to deliver a clearly defined outcome. They provide direction, instructions and guidance to ensure the achievement of set goals. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same whatever the role.

Key responsibilities are likely to include supporting, managing and developing team members, managing projects, planning and monitoring workloads and resources, delivering operational plans, resolving problems, and building relationships internally and externally.

Level 4

Associate Project Manager (under development)

Projects can be defined and delivered within different contexts, across diverse industry sectors. They can be large or small. Every project needs to be managed to ensure its success, An associate project manager knows what needs to be achieved, how it will be achieved, how long it will take and how much it will cost, and works with the project team to achieve the required outcomes. Associate project managers need good planning, organisation, leadership, management and communication skills. An associate project manager utilises resources with suitable skills, qualifications, experience and knowledge to work together in a motivated and integrated team.

School Business Professional

School Business Professionals perform a role which is unique to schools, administering and managing the financial, site and support services within the school context. They provide essential support to school leadership teams, implementing their financial and business decisions. They may work in any school setting (primary, secondary, special) and in different school structures: single academy trusts, multi academy trusts, local authority maintained schools and federations, etc. They can work in very different settings with varying numbers of people that they report to including the headteacher or School Business Director.

Level 5

Operations/Departmental Manager

An operations/departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Working in the private, public or third sector and in all sizes of organisation, specific responsibilities and job titles will vary, but the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed will be the same. Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.
