Local age-friendly initiatives

In 2016 Middlesbrough Council received national recognition from the Alzheimer's Society for being a dementia-friendly town. To find out more about the progress Middlesbrough is making, check the dementia page.

In places where 'please have a seat' signs are displayed, shoppers can sit down and rest, use a bathroom (if available), or have a drink of water.

Age-related sensory loss affects most of us as we grow older. It's estimated that around 5.9% of the population of Middlesbrough has some form of sensory loss. The majority of those people are aged over 65. Find out more about how we're changing things to support people with sensory loss.

In September 2021, Ageing Better Middlesbrough in partnership with Public Health South Tees carried out a Middlesbrough-wide age-friendly survey with residents. The survey findings helped to shape the Middlesbrough age-friendly charter, and a baseline report 'Middlesbrough: an age-friendly town? Where we are now - March 2022'.
