The A1 (M), A19 and A66 run through the region from the North to South and East to West.

Middlesbrough bus station is a major transport hub within the Tees Valley providing local bus services to and from cities, town and villages around the Teesside area, reaching as far afield as Scarborough, Darlington and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Middlesbrough railway station is served by a number of lines: the Tees Valley Line from Bishop Auckland and Darlington to Saltburn (Northern), the Esk Valley Line to Whitby via Nunthorpe and Grosmont (Northern), the Durham Coast Line to Newcastle via Hartlepool and Sunderland (Northern), and the North TransPennine line to Manchester Airport via York and Leeds (TransPennine Express).
